What is a Neurotologist?

Updated: Nov 26, 2025

A Neurotologist is a surgeon who specializes in disorders of the ear and hearing, and brain tumors that originate from the cranial nerves or structures adjacent to the temporal bone portion of the skull.

The most common tumors include acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, glomus tumors and advanced parotid gland and ear skin cancers.

A  Neurotologist performs cochlear implants.

A Neurotologist also treats Bell’s Palsy and performs facial nerve surgery.

A Neurotologist treats inner ear causes of Vertigo, including Meniere’s Disease with a variety of medical and surgical means.

Some Neurotologists are Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology through a process of accreditation of their fellowship programs.  In 1998, Dr. Andrew Fishman was the first graduate of an accredited Neurotology training program in the United States. Dr. Fishman serves as an examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology to certify graduates of Neurotology training programs.
