A Brief History of Cochlear Implant Electrode Development

This talk shares my personal experience in developing cochlear implant electrodes — a journey that began in the mid-1990s and continues today. I discuss early design flaws, the controversies that divided the field, and how corporate ideologies often shaped technical directions. Over time, the designs have begun to converge toward safer and more physiologic concepts. Future developments and the lessons learned from decades of experimentation are also explored.
